THE CENTRAL HIGHLANDS

 

                          

Brief history

Called Tay Nguyen in Vietnamese, Les Hauts Plateaux du Sud by French. This name has been known since 1960 because of the clause about the autonomous area of the ethnic minorities ( consist Tay Nguyen) in The Constitution of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. This region consists of 5 province: Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Lam Dong. The central highlands cover the southern part of the Truong Son mountain Range.

Population: 2600 million people

Total area is 44 000 square kilometer

Tay Nguyen is autonomous area where the ethnic minority live. Because of being an incomplete nation, large land, thinly populated, The Champa kingdom had made highlanders target of their attacks to make a slave out of them.

After that Nguyen Hoang founded his land in South and excluded the influence of the Champa kingdom, Tay Nguyen came back under Viet’s protective regime. However, the Vietnamese kings had not a close surveillance here.
Under French domination, French realized a series of discoveries in this area. In 1888, a kingdom was built here by a French – M. Mayrena. In 1891, doctor Alexandre Yersin found out Liang Biang highlands. He proposed the colonial government to construct here a vacation- city. Since that, French have attention of explore the Central highlands’s economy.
In 1900, French chose Da Lat for their vacation – city. They constructed the administrative centre, plantations….
With the influence of Northeast and Southeast, so the climate is temperate, it is tropical, humid and monsoon. There are 2 separated seasons: rainy season (May to October) and drying season (November to April) . With the increase in altitude, the temperature in the highlands is cool, ranging between 18ْ C and 25ْC.

  • Culture
  • Its main features are the beautiful scenery and the many minority groups (montagnards) living in this area (the Ê Đê, Gia Rai, Ba Na, Xơ Đăng,Mơ Nông...). The local people live by community, stick with nature.

’Cong Chieng’ festival (Festival of gongs):this is the culture of the ethnic minority here. Cong and Chieng are the highlander’s music instruments. Cong has a knob in the middle, Chieng has none. Cong makes the deep bass sounds, coaxing melodies. The sounds of the Cong Chieng are the soul of the highlands. The deep sounds and melodies left an indelible impression on the large audience.The local people play to commemorate good harvests, at religious festivals and on many other occasions like child-birth, weddings and funerals. The highlanders believe that a divine entity resides in each Cồng and Chiêng. Figures of Cồng Chiêng teams can be found on bronze drums which date back to 3000 years ago.With recent economic and cultural developments, many musical instruments have made their way to the central highlands, but the Cồng Chiêng will remain intricately woven into the fabric of a highlander’s life for ever.The region is great for nature- lovers who want to enjoy a very unique experience.
