The Tonle Sap lake, Cruise Tonle Sap Tours

The Tonle Sap lake, Cruise Tonle Sap Tours

Temples aside, Siem Reap has another unique attraction in the fascinating Tonle Sap, the massive freshwater lake that dominates the map of Cambodia. The lake is at once a reservoir, flood-relief system, communications route, home, and larder to the people who live on and around it; even Cambodians who live nowhere near depend on it as a rich food source.

At its lowest, in May, just before the rains, the lake covers an area of around 2500 square kilometres. Himalayan meltwater flows down the Mekong just as the monsoon rains arrive, causing the level of the river to rise so quickly that at Phnom Penh the pressure is sufficient to reverse the flow of the Tonle Sap River, which would normally drain the lake. As a result of this inflow, each year the lake inundates an area of over ten thousand square kilometres, making it the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. The flow of water reverts to its usual direction in late October or early November, the receding waters leaving behind fertile mud for the planting of rice, and nutrients for the fry which have spawned amid the flooded trees. February sees a bumper fish catch, much of it going to satisfy the insatiable Cambodian appetite for prohok.

Fishing is big business on the Tonle Sap, and the government has awarded large concessions to wealthy businessmen at the expense of local fishermen, who have to either practise their trade illegally or rent a share from a concessionaire. The majority of these fishermen are part of the lake’s huge itinerant population, mostly stateless ethnic Vietnamese, living in mobile floating villages on the lakeshore.

Pre Rup Temple, Siemreap Temples

Pre Rup Temple, Siemreap Temples

Back at Srah Srang, you can join the Grand Circuit by following the road east through paddy fields and scrub forest until you see the towers of Pre Rup, its name literally meaning "turning the body", a reference to a cremation ritual. Consecrated to Shiva around 962, this state-temple of Rajendravarman II was built primarily of laterite and brick, the materials giving it a warmth lacking in many sandstone monuments.

An archetypal temple-mountain, Pre Rup is seen in its full majesty from the west, when it stands out against the rice fields. The ruined eastern gopura gives access to the second enclosure, its eastern side mostly taken up with two groups of tall brick towers – the pair to the north have space for a third tower which was never built. Long halls, now mostly ruined, line the first enclosure, giving it the appearance of having had a gallery, though in fact Pre Rup was the last temple to be built without one. Right in front of you as you enter this enclosure is a small stone cistern, which was for some time assumed to be associated with cremations, though more recently it’s been suggested that it might have been a pedestal for a statue. The three levels of holes you’ll spot in the brick libraries which flank the pathway leading to the enclosure were in fact for ventilation. An unusual feature in the northeast corner of the enclosure is a small, square, laterite building – open on all sides – which may once have housed a stele.

Stairways guarded by lions lead up all four sides of the pyramid, around whose lowest level stand twelve symmetrically placed small shrines. Two extra s

Ta Prohm Temple, Siemreap temples

Ta Prohm Temple, Siemreap temples

Enormous kapok trees grow from the terraces and walls at Ta Prohm, their massive roots clinging to the walls, framing doorways and prising apart giant stones. None of the 39 towers is intact and the partly collapsed, maze-like state of the temple makes it difficult to plan a route or work out its layout, which is in fact on a single level, with three closely spaced galleried enclosures in the central area. It doesn’t matter if you get a bit disoriented, though, since part of the charm of a visit here is in leaving the well-trodden paths to clamber over collapsed masonry and duck through caved-in galleries. The temple attracts plenty of visitors, but it’s usually quiet in the early morning, as mist rises off the algae-covered stones, or in the late afternoon, as the shadows lengthen.

Constructed by Jayavarman VII around 1186, Ta Prohm was a Buddhist monastery dedicated to Prajnaparamita, and would once have housed a statue of this deity in the image of the king’s mother (inscriptions say that a further 260 holy images were installed in surrounding chambers and niches). As a working monastery it accommodated twelve thousand people, who lived and worked within its grounds, while a further eighty thousand people were employed locally to service and maintain the complex. Additionally, the monastery supplied provisions and medicines to the 102 hospitals that Jayavarman instituted around the kingdom.

The site

The majority of visitors arrive from Ta Keo while on the Small Circuit, approaching from the west, but if you use the track off the road northwest of Banteay Kdei, you can enter from the east as was originally intended. From Ta Keo, the path meanders off the road and under towering trees for around 300m until

Angkor Thom Temple, Siemreap Temples

Angkor Thom Temple, Siemreap Temples

"The wall of the city is some five miles in circumference. It has five gates each with double portals … Outside the wall stretches a great moat, across which access to the city is given by massive causeways. Flanking the causeways on each side are fifty-four divinities resembling war-lords in stone, huge and terrifying …"

Still recognizable from this description by the Chinese envoy Chou Ta-Kuan, who visited the Khmer court at the end of the thirteenth century, the great city of Angkor Thom covers an area of three square kilometres, enclosed by a wide moat and an eight-metre-high wall reinforced by a wide earth embankment (constructed by Jayavarman VII after the city had been sacked by the Cham in 1177). Numerous monuments are contained within the city. At the centre is the state-temple, the Bayon, one of the great sights of Angkor, dominated by huge faces looking out from its many towers, and boasting two enclosures of bas-reliefs.

North of the Bayon, Jayavarman VII had to squeeze his royal palace (which was built largely of wood, and thus has not survived) into a space between the Baphuon – the state-temple of Udayadityavarman II – and Phimeanakas – the tiny state-temple of Suryavarman I. In front of the palace he had two huge, gloriously carved terraces constructed, to be used as viewing platforms over the royal square and parade grounds.

Nothing prepares you for the majesty of Angkor Wat. The temple’s five majestic, corncob-shaped towers hold the eye captive, while the mind marvels at the vision of the architects who created this masterpiece of Khmer architecture, consecrated around 1150 to the Hindu god Vishnu; scholars have calculated that it would have taken thirty years to complete. As you approach, the intricacy of the layout becomes apparent, and close up, every nook and cranny reveals itself to be filled with fine detail; around every corner a new feature surpasses the last. If time allows, it’s worth visiting at different times of day to see how the colours of the stone change, the spires golden in the dying light at dusk.

Experts have long debated whether Angkor Wat was built for worship or for funerary purposes; much of the confusion has arisen because the site is approached from the west and the gallery of bas-reliefs is designed to be viewed anti-clockwise, the direction associated with death. Nowadays, it’s generally accepted that it was used by the king for the worship of the devaraja during his lifetime, and became his mausoleum upon his death.

Unusually, entry to the complex is from the west, via an impressive laterite causeway, currently being restored; you can look down into the excavations to see the massive blocks used in the causeway’s construction.
Vinh Moc Tunnels, DMZ, Vietnam

One of the most intriguing sites that we visited during our tour of the DMZ was the Vinh Moc Tunnels, located on the northern side of the DMZ along the coast of the South China Sea. The village of Vinh Moc found itself tragically positioned in one of the most heavily bombed areas of North Vietnam. In order to escape this bombardment, the villagers constructed approximately 2.8 km of underground tunnels which they used as a refuge to survive the bombings. The tunnels were built in three levels (12, 15 and 23 meters deep) and took thirteen months to complete. Three hundred people lived intermittently in the tunnels during 1966 to 1971. Sixty-two families made the tunnels their home and amazingly seventeen babies were born here and spent the first years of their lives underground.

The Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) was created in April, 1954 as a result of the Geneva Conference ending the war between the Viet Minh and the French. The DMZ extends 5 km north and south of the Ben Hai River and runs approximately 100 km from the South China Sea to the Laos border. Originally proposed as a temporary demarcation line between the communist controlled north and the "democratic" south, the DMZ became the permanent border between North Vietnam and South Vietnam when the 1956 nationwide elections were cancelled due to the obvious imminent victory of Ho Chi Minh and the Communists. Fearing the downfall of the South Vietnamese government to the powerful Communist Army of the North, the United States began sending military advisors, troops, supplies and weapons to the South Vietnamese government headed by president Ngo Dinh Diem.
In an effort to supply the Viet Cong (South Vietnamese Communists) with troops and armaments, the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) created a series of interconnecting roads and trails (approximately 20,000 km in total) popularly known as the Ho Chi Minh Trail, which extended from North Vietnam to the South. In an attempt to stop this flow of munitions, the United States and the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN, the South Vietnamese Army) created a series of bases along Route 9 (which parallels the DMZ appproximately 10 km to the south).
This series of bases, mines and electrified fencing became known as the McNamara Line, na

Hidden in the shadows of ancient trees in Sa Phin valley is the palace of the former Meo ethnic minority lord.

The estate of Meo Lord Vuong Chi Sinh was built in the early 20th century in Vietnam’s northernmost mountainous area, in Sa Phin Commune in Dong Van District of Ha Giang Province. Vuong Chi Sinh is famous for donating most of his treasure to the Vietnamese revolutionary force in the war against French colonialists.

He was named Vuong Chi Thanh by President Ho Chi Minh and nominated as a member of the first and second National Assembly of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, the former name of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Sinh’s royal-styled palace was inspired by both ancient Asian and Western architecture. It took nearly a decade to build the palace, which covers an area of 1,120 square meters.

The lord employed several famous local geographers to decide a favorable position for a possible building. Sa Phin Valley, which is shaped like a tortoise (the symbol of longevity and prosperity) and protected by eight surrounding mountains, was finally selected. The two-floor structure contains 64 rooms. The first story is made of stones while the second floor is wooden. The walls are made of clay to keep the interior cool in summer and warm in winter. t the end of the palace, there are two stone buildings. One was used by the lord to store money and explosives, the other to store opium and guns. At the front of the palace are two lines of tombs. The tombs on the right-hand side are said to contain the bodies of the lord and his sons, while the left-hand side is the final resting place of his wives and daught
